KYCers are off to a great start in the Life Skills Program!
This year’s life skills programs are broken up into five categories:
Employment
Education
Family and Relationships
Hobbies, Adventure, and Travel
The Nuts and Bolts (specific skills that will help our participants succeed as adults!)
We are starting off with goal setting within each of these three areas. In the beginning of the month, students did a great job sharing goals related to education and employment. Last week we set goals pertaining to family and relationships. On Thursday we will address hobbies, adventure, and travel! It’s been a lot of fun getting to know our KYCers better. We are thrilled to be able to support their individual goals!
Q1: What sport is known as “America’s Favorite Pastime”?
Q2: Who is known as The King of Rock and Roll?
Q3: What type of bird can fly backwards? (answers below)
Students worked in teams to answer a broad range of questions.
We started with an appetizer of nachos and had shepherd’s pie for dinner!
A1. Baseball
A2. Elvis Presley
A3. The humming bird
Student leaders at the KYC will be hosting a Halloween party called, The Kingswood Spook Center!
Students worked to turn our corn-hole boards into an exciting halloween game!
Others worked to make Halloween face boards for silly photos!
Thanks for your help so far KYCers. We still need to bake goodies, decorate, and get ready for games and face painting! Our teens’ leadership should make for a fun night next Wednesday!
Come all families with children! On October 24 from 5:00-7:00PM the KYC will be hosting the ‘Kingswood Spook Center.’ The event is run by our teens and is open to our community’s children and families! Please join us (it’s free and there’s treats!)
Do you know what BTAS! is? BTAS! (beyond the after school) programs are those programs we offer in the evening, on weekends, and during school vacations. These programs are offered in addition to our long standing afterschool program. BTAS! programs started yesterday with cycle night!
We got to use our brand new bikes!
We are so lucky to have the community’s rail trail right in our backyard!
Our destination: Albee Beach!
We will offer evening BTAS! programs each Wednesday in October!
We had a great first day of this school year in our after-school program yesterday. The turn-out was great with many familiar faces and some new ones too!
Teams of participants worked together on a ‘tour the KYC scavenger hunt!’
The activity reminded everyone of the many things the KYC offers…
…and gave us time with friends.
Thanks to those who joined us. Any high school and middle schoolers who didn’t make it yesterday are encouraged to come on down…we’ll be here all year.
Yesterday we had a great day with devoted KYC volunteers. It was Granite United Way’s Central Region’s Day of Caring. Two great volunteers from Central NH VNA and Hospice served the KYC. Thank you! We also hosted a volunteer luncheon, at which our program volunteers finished getting ready for the school year!
Our United Way Volunteers with KYC Staff!
A great group of KYC volunteers with the staff!
The Luncheon! Thanks volunteers! I’d say we’re ready for next week!
Well, school’s back in session and the last few days have felt like autumn. Here’s a look at the KYC’s series of weekly full-day summer programs, offered during summer 2018. The afterschool program starts Monday!
We got the summer started with a hike to Devil’s Den Mountain in New Durham. We explored the namesake cave, “The Devil’s Den!”
A slightly more challenging and equally beautiful hike to Mt. Roberts. After our hike we took a swim!
Cycle Day! We rode our brand new bikes into town on the Bridge Falls Path. Following our ride we had a cookout, hung out at the KYC, and went to the beach!
On this fun-filled day, we went to the beach, practiced our cooking skills at the KYC, and worked on getting sponsorships for our Chili Challenge Fundraiser.
A swim with Chucky! Chuck Rosa of Seabrook, NH swims in the ocean everyday of the year! His famous “dips” are in the name of substance misuse prevention. On August 1, the KYC got to take a dip with Chucky!
We got a tour of Lakes Region Community College in Laconia, NH. We learned about the many programs offered, transferring to 4-year schools, dorm living, and more! Following the Grand Tour, we hit Weirs Beach for a swim and ice cream!
Museum, Mammals, and Mountains-M, M, & M! We took a hike to Red Hill in Moultonboro, viewed animal exhibits at the Libby Museum, and swam in 19-Mile Bay!
Rain, Rain, Go Away! We made good use of a rainy day: cooking at the KYC, games, preperation for our Chili Challenge Fundraiser, and bowling at Fun Spot!
4000 Footer Quest! We climbed on of NH’s 48 4000 footers: Mt. Moosilauke! Nice work KYC!
We took an Aviation Archaeological Expedition! We visited the 1972 plane crash site on Belknap Mountain, enjoyed an amazing view from the top, got ice cream, and took a swim in Alton Bay.
Thanks to everyone who supported this fun and valuable series of summer programs. The KYC is proud to have provided local youth with recreation, education, and time with friends throughout their summer vacations. On Monday, ‘we hit the ground running’ with After-school and BTAS! programs! See you there.
For our final summer program, we took an aviation archaeological expedition to the 1972 plane crash site on Belknap Mountain. We also went swimming in Alton Bay and went out for ice cream. What a great end to a wonderful series of programs. The after-school program starts next week!
We started on Carriage Road and took the Green Tr. up!
The summit fire tower!
The view form the top!
We took a ‘herd path’ down to the wreckage. What an interesting spot!
Following the hike, we took our group out for ice cream!…
…and swimming!
The very next day was the first day of what we plan to make a great school year! Thank you to everyone who participated in and contributed to our 2018 summer programs!
Last week the KYC went on a quest to one of NH’s 48 4000 foot peaks: Mt. Moosilauke, the 10th highest peak in NH!
Our enthusiastic group starting up the Gorge Brook Tr.
A beautiful rout up!
As the trees got smaller, we knew we were nearing the top!
What a view from the top! This was the KYC’s second 4000 footer accent; last year we hiked Cannon. Nice job KYC!
