Our Life Skills Programs continued last week with Job Application Bingo! The activity gave high school and middle schoolers the opportunity to look at the format of job applications. This exposure will be very helpful as our KYCers enter the workforce (many already have!).
Groups of two each received a different filled out job application. Mara and Zachary prompted the students to hunt through the apps based on different criteria. For example: ‘Applicant has a Master’s Degree,’ ‘Applicant’s phone number is in an area code other than 603,’ ‘Applicant worked in food service,’ ‘One of the applicants references is a teacher,’ etc.
Students called Bingo! whenever they collected five corresponding facts. Prizes were awarded!
This proved to be a fun way to expose our students to the job application process. Throughout the year we will host fun activities to teach teens a variety of life skills.
BTAS! (beyond the afterschool) programs are those activities offered by the KYC during school vacations, holidays, evenings, and weekends. We had three fun BTAS! programs over the recent school vacation. January BTAS! programs are each Wednesday from 5:00-7:00 PM.
Here’s a photo from one of our early BTAS! programs, an April vacation game day!
In one of our BTAS! programs, a group of us attended Last Night here in Wolfeboro! What a fun way to end a great year!
The program started with some games and treats at the KYC!
We headed to the First Congregational Church for Bingo!
Then a live animal show from Wildlife Encounters!
We capped the evening with fireworks over Wolfeboro Bay!
Thank you to everyone in our community who made all the fun Last Night Events possible! 2018 was a great year at the KYC! We look forward to making 2019 even better!
We hope all students are enjoying vacation! We had a lot of fun offering two full-day programs. Yesterday we took a trip to Copple Crown Mountain. Today we practiced yoga, talked about New Years Resolutions, watched a movie, baked, and enjoyed time with friends.
Part of our group headed up Copple Crown. Not a ton of snow left, but we did have to bundle up due to winter temps!
A little more snow higher up!
A classic KYC summit photo!
Today we tried something that was new to a lot of us yoga!
Talkin’ ’bout a resolution! We talked New Years Resolutions as a group!
A couple students decided to work in the kitchen, treating us to brownies, hot chocolate, and Jello. Thanks!
What a great couple days of BTAS! programs! Happy New Year!
Welcome to Throwback Thursday! Here’s a photo from our holiday party in 2016. Next Thursday we celebrate again. Happy Holidays!
For this blog post, we asked our Teen Council Members some questions:
What is the KYC? Teen Council Says: “The KYC is a fun place where kids can get away!”
What does the KYC offer? “Great food, great people, fun place to hang out with friends, activities, music lessons, and more.”
What is the Teen Council? Teen Council says: “a group of students who get together and help to make the KYC a great place!”
What does the Teen Council do? Teen Council says: ” The Teen Council helps the KYC by creating activities, and challenges, and making sure kids have a good place to go when they are not in school.”
We’ve been having a lot of fun getting ready for the holidays. Students have been working hard to make gifts for loved ones. Students also helped make holiday cards for many of our supporters (we can’t get everyone, but we certainly want to wish everyone in the community Happy Holidays!).
We can’t thank our supporters enough! We hope these handmade cards are a good start! Happy Holidays!
Small wood projects will make great gifts. We have a feeling that handmade student work will be appreciated more than anything we could buy at the store!
Patience pays off when it comes to small wood craft!
This jewelry box will make a great gift. Nice work!
We have more fun planned for the rest of the month and school vacation!
Yesterday, in our substance misuse prevention programs, we discussed the risks and dangers of vaping. In the video below, a doctor explains that much is still unknown about the health implications of electronic cigarette use. We noted that this uncertainty is akin to that surrounding cigarette use in the first half of the 20th century. Ultimately cigarette smoking proved to be a grave health concern that has caused wide-spread suffering. What we don’t want is for history to repeat itself with vape use! We don’t think anyone wants to be a guinea pig in such a risky retirement. One of our goals is to help our participants make good choices. The people in our lives are one of our most important resources and networks of support! In Life Skills this year, one of our four categories of exploration is ‘Family and Relationships.’ Positive relationships are an important part of a fulfilling and successful life. Yesterday, in our life skills program, we looked at the people in our lives. It was great to see that our KYCers easily identified those in their network of important people! Thinking about these important relationships is well timed, as many people are celebrating holidays this time of year, which underscore the importance of family and friends. Happy holidays, from the KYC!
The worksheet below guided our discussions and exploration!
Name
The People in My Life…
Directions: Fill in this simple worksheet to help everyone to get to know you better and to help you think about your relationships with the important people in your life. As always, only share what you are comfortable sharing.
The people I live with…
My friends…
My favorite teacher…
Others who are close to me…
Who do you have the most fun with? (okay to choose more than one!)
If you were stranded on an island and had to choose one person to be stranded with, who would you choose?
Who do you want there if you’re feeling bad (sad, angry, worried, etc.)?
